There are two main items of potential concern that Christian parents should know about.
First, these cats believe in the ability to receive direction from their ancestors, who are said to be a part of the Starclan. The book communicates this is true during moments where the leader of the clan goes and gets a prophetic type message or dream of what is to come. There are also comments to the effect of knowing that “Starclan is with me”. The author’s bio does mention having an interest in astrology (something Christian’s are told to flee from, note: very different from Astronomy), but there is nothing in that direction outside of this point.
Second, this book falls on the violent side for the audience it targets. It’s a bit tricky to explain this accurately, but we will give it a shot. Violence appears somewhat frequently throughout the story. We think what makes it stick out more than in other books that have this aspect to it is visualizing cats fighting, often to the death, is something different than made-up superheroes throwing each other into cars and buildings, for example. Here cats pounce on each other and prey with sharp claws and the violence is described with a decent bit of detail. Quite a few cats are killed in this story. An example of one of the more graphic lines, when killing a rat that attacked them we read the cat “felt the bones of its neck crunch in his mouth and its body go limp.”
Outside of these two primary concerns, which should not be taken too lightly by any means, there is little else for concerning content.
